Aurora, Mo. -

Due to the combined efforts of many firefighters, a fire in downtown Aurora was contained to one building in the early hours Thursday.

The Aurora Fire Department received a call at approximately 5:50 a.m. of a fire in progress at 131 Madison.  By the beginning of the normal work day, firefighters had the situation under control and streets open for the public.

The building consists of Dr. John Watts’ office on the first floor and residence on the upper floors. Fire Chief Robert Ward noted one of the two occupants was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

Assisting local firefighters were the Aurora Rural Fire Department and those from Monett, Verona and Marionville (city and rural). Officers from the Aurora Police Department provided assistance, as well.

Chief Ward noted the fire began in the southwest corner of the building and appeared to be accidental in nature, although the investigation was still under way at press time. He did report the fire had broken through the floor, causing firefighters to tear out a portion of the ceiling of the lower rooms.
