Corning Iowa native John Stuart was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major during a ceremony held at the Freedom Center, at the Camp Dodge Joint Maneuver Training Center on August 10.
Sgt. Maj. Stuart currently serves as the operations sergeant major for the Recruiting and Retention Battalion.
Stuart has served in the Iowa National Guard for over 28 years. A career he’s invested in due to the influence of his family.
“I joined to serve my country because my grandfather, father and my brother served,” said Stuart. “The reason I chose to serve and continue to serve is because of the tuition assistance, student loan repayment and the many friendships I’ve gained while being in the National Guard.”
Stuart is married to Sarah B. Stuart of Corning, Iowa, and is the son of John W. Stuart of Aurora, Missouri, and Deborah A. Davis of Grant, Iowa.
Stuart graduated from Corning High School in 1989, earned an Associate’s degree in Automotive Studies from Lincoln Technical Institute in Des Moines, Iowa, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Grantham University in Kansas City, Missouri.
Stuart’s pursuit of higher education has continued. Just four months ago, he graduated from the United States Sergeant Major Academy on April 20.
During his 28-year career, Stuart mobilized twice. He deployed to Kuwait in 2001 with Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment and to Afghanistan in 2005 with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment.
