While many things have changed at Smart Insurance Agency in the past 60 years, making clients feel like a member of the family has always remained the same. From the beginning in 1958, Jim and Carrell Smart offered a variety of services to their customers including real estate, hunting/fishing licenses, accounting and more. Three generations later, many longtime customers of this independent insurance agency can still remember sitting in the front office sharing their personal fishing or hunting stories always hoping to one-up their friend with a story that was bigger and better.
Randy Smart joined his father in the agency in 1976 and partnered with him until his retirement in 1992. As this transition took place, technology changed but the family-focus never did. Randy has served on many company advisory boards, the MAIA Board of Directors, and volunteers his time to numerous community organizations and his church, Marionville First Baptist.
In 2006, Lauren (Smart) Layman joined her father full-time in the agency with the hopes of pursuing continued success in the family business. Then in 2011, Lauren was joined by her husband Nick Layman. In addition to the family staff, Delma Malcom (31 years), Kay Kerans (21 years), and Sheyenne Lawson (five years) round out the current agency staff. With nearly 100 years of combined insurance experience, the agency hopes to provide customers with relationships that help them feel confident that their needs are being protected for every stage of life they might enter.
Since opening its doors, SIA has been focused on three major things: providing care and protection through firm, trustworthy relationships with clients; being a fixture in the community and surrounding area by being involved in local needs through giving of time, finances and other resources; and encouraging employees and clients to be proactive in helping those around them through various events and activities.
Over the years, Smart Insurance has been recognized countless times by numerous companies for its commitment to providing excellent services to both companies and customers. As the go-between for customers and companies, SIA hopes to bridge that gap and provide the knowledge and honest engagement that customers would hope to receive from family.
In addition to day-to-day business of selling insurance, employees of Smart Insurance pride themselves on being community-focused by hosting community events (SMART Start to Summer and Christmas at the Vault), by sponsoring local school events and athletic teams and by supporting local charitable organizations through the SMART Supports referral program.
