The Church of the Nazarene in Aurora will begin offering weekly addiction recovery classes starting Saturday, September 9. The classes will use the Celebrate Recovery curriculum, a biblically-based 12-step recovery program offered in more than 29,000 churches worldwide.
There is no charge to attend. Each session begins with a free potluck supper. The meal is followed by a large group teaching session with small discussion groups afterwards. No child care will be provided.
In many cases, Celebrate Recovery is allowed for people required by the courts to attend recovery support groups. Those needing to attend support meetings should check with their probation officer or court liaison. The church will be starting from the beginning of the program, so this is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get started in a 12-step program.
Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA, and co-founder of the Celebrate Recovery Program, states that what makes the program unique among other support groups is that it is “based on the words of Christ, rather than on psychological theory.”
Rather than focusing on the past and assigning blame, Celebrate Recovery places its teaching emphasis on each participant’s future wellbeing, personal responsibility and the healing power of Jesus Christ.
