Devils Lake and Lake Region State College sports were in action this weekend.
Devils Lake football loses 20-0 at Williston in opener
The Devils Lake football team opened its season with a 20-0 loss on the road to Williston.
The Coyotes spread out their scoring with touchdowns in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Offensively, the Firebirds gained 150 total yards while Williston had 329. The Coyotes ran 69 plays compared to DL’s 34.
DL quarterback Jake Mertens went 10-of-17 passing for 112 yards and two interceptions. His favorite targets were Zach Dahlen (4 receptions, 51 yards) and Nik Desai (4 receptions, 42 yards).
Desai added 12 tackles on the defensive side and Mertens totaled 10 tackles. Micah Cox had 7.5 tackles, four solo.
The Firebirds host Bismarck Legacy (1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Firebird volleyball begins season 2-4 in Bismarck
The Devils Lake volleyball team traveled to the East-West Invitational in Bismarck over the weekend, going 2-4.
On Friday, the Firebirds lost 3-0 to Fargo Shanley, beat Bismarck St. Mary’s 3-0 and lost 3-0 to Bismarck.
The next day, DL lost 3-0 to Bismarck Legacy, 3-0 to Minot before defeating Dickinson 2-1 to wrap up the weekend.
DL travels to Grand Forks Central tomorrow for a 7 p.m. match.
DL cross country competes in Northwood last week
Last Thursday, the Devils Lake cross country teams took part in the Thunder Cross Country meet in Northwood. The Firebird varsity girls placed third of 16 teams while the varsity boys took 12th of 16 teams.
Ramsey Brown and Jessica Mertens led the way for the girls, with Brown placing 10th with a time of 21:14.7 and Mertens right behind her for 11th in 21:16.0.
Chiara Olson took 32nd with a 24:07.0 and Macy Schneider placed 36th in 25:17.1.
The girls race saw 58 runners.
With 74 runners on the boys side, Ian Tjeltee was the frontrunner for the Firebirds, taking 32nd in 19:57.3. Matt Alexander placed 35th with a time of 20:15.2.
Max Schuh took 46 in 21:12.5 and Trenton McCoud finished 51st with a 21:52.1.
James Kraft placed 67th with a 23:22.0, Quincy Stotts took 71st with a 24:30.6 and Josh Sailor finished 72nd with a time of 24:52.3.
LRSC golf finish first round of season in Bismarck
The Lake Region State College men’s golf team currently sits in seventh place of seven teams in the Bismarck State College Mystics Golf Fall Invitational with a team score of 369.
The second and final round finishes up today.
Casey Julson is currently tied for 20th with an 82. Nicholas Brockman is 34th with an 89, Austin Kozojed is 35th with a 90 and Bryce Sebelius is 37th with a 108.
LRSC volleyball goes 1-3 at Ridgewater Classic
The Lake Region State College volleyball team began its season at the Ridgewater Classic, going 1-3 over the weekend.
The Royals got off to a strong start Friday with a 3-0 win against Riverland Community College (25-16, 28-26 25-22).
LRSC then lost 3-0 to Central Lakes College (23-25, 16-25, 17-25).
On Saturday, the Royals lost 3-1 to Ellsworth Community College (25-16, 16-25, 21-25, 17-25) and then lost 3-0 to Ridgewater College (16-25, 19-25, 15-25).
LRSC travels to face Jamestown JV tomorrow at 7 p.m.
