Labor Day weekend is here. Many families will plan one last special outing to mark the end of summer. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to expect a change in traffic patterns during the weekend.

Verona board recognizes construction volunteers

During the August 26 meeting of the Verona School Board, Bill Sweet, superintendent,  recognized Dale Whitlock, Quinton Bauer and Eugene Mahurin for the countless hours they have spent constructing the bleacher extensions in the gym.

Empire’s rates go up September 10

The Empire District Electric Company has announced that the Missouri Public Service Commission (MPSC) has found that the Plum Point Generating Station located at Osceola, Arkansas, met all in-service criteria prior to the August 15 deadline that was established in the MPSC Order issued on May 19. 

MoDOT plans local meeting

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation will host an informational meeting September 2 to provide details to area residents about the closure of the Business 60 bridge at Verona. 

Departments receive grants

Staff members from the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Forestry Division have been distributing matching funds grant checks during July and August. 

Taking to the skies again

For about 65 years, few World War II veteran pilots have stepped foot inside the aircraft they used to defend their countries and fellow servicemen, but groups like the Liberty Foundation are giving those veterans and other WWII enthusiasts a chance to relive the days that the B-17 bomber flew overhead.

Man enters plea of guilty to sodomy charges involving youths

Audel Leonardo Lopez Rodriguez, age 26 of Monett, entered an Alfored plea of guilty to four counts of statutory sodomy in the first degree when he appeared before Judge Robert S. Wiley on August 18. 

City bird visits country cousins

Fredbird, the official mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals, is learning about agriculture this summer. Part of his learning experience took place at the Mulford farm northwest of Aurora.

Board approves change in duties

During their meeting Monday night, members of the Aurora Park Board approved reverting to a resolution that limits the board’s responsibility to regulating and establishing rules and regulations for the use and conduct of the city’s recreational facilities and recommending capital improvements for the development of the parks.

Students return to class

The first day of school dawned a bit cloudy and with temperatures much more moderate that in past weeks. By the time students reached their destinations, the sun was shining brightly.

School to receive funding

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill announced recently that the United States Department of Education Teaching American History Grants Program will provide the Aurora School District with $998,901 in federal grant funding to improve U.S. history instruction within the classroom.

Former resident receives special medal

On October 3, 2009, Chief Warrant Officer Clifford “Bill” Bauman, formerly of Aurora, didn’t think twice when he was faced with a dilemma.

Board conducts tax levy hearing

As required by state law, the Aurora R-8 School District must provide notice of the expected tax levy required for the coming year and notice of the public hearing, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., August 9, in the high school media center.

Angel Food price drops to $29 beginning in August

Janie Derby with the Angel Food program in Aurora said that beginning in August, regular box prices have dropped to $29.
