A series of 12 Step Up to Leadership classes are continuing at the OACAC Lawrence County Neighborhood Center in Aurora.
Ryan Rickets, an attorney from Marionville, a member of OACAC’s county advisory board and a representative to the OACAC area board, directed a session entitled “All Aboard Legalities.”
Rickets discussed how nonprofits work, how to understand legal standards board members must follow and the roles and responsibilities for board members.
In another session, Renette Wardlow, human development specialist with 24 years experience with University of Missouri Extension, discussed with the class how to plan and conduct meetings, the basics of parliamentary procedure as explained in Robert’s Rules of Order and understanding the importance of meeting decorum.
The “Step Up to Leadership” curriculum was developed by Community Action Agencies in the State of Missouri and the University of Missouri Extension with support from the State of Missouri Community Services Block Grant office and the Missouri Association for Community Action Inc.
“Step Up to Leadership” is designed for income eligible community-minded people wanting to make a difference by assuming responsibilities of board membership, working with groups, developing strong working partnerships, and people who want to be good leaders.
Understanding board responsibilities, parliamentary procedures, how to run a committee meeting, public speaking tips, understanding themselves and others and how to build strong relationships by learning in a safe and fun environment is the goal of this program, according to a spokesman.
The following have committed to provide a meal for each of the participants for the duration of classes: First Baptist Church Women on Missions, Pizza Hut, Hawg Wild, First Christian Church, Melvey Hillhouse, Superior Mart, Subway at Wal-Mart, Alice Irene’s and the OACAC staff.
