The Marionville Comets hit a first-round snag in the 2012 Crane Tournament as they faced their rival Crane. That snag was followed by a second-round loss to Wheaton, giving the Comets a 0-2 record at the tournament.
Marionville fell 39-57 to Crane in the first game.
In the Wheaton game on January 24, Marionville and Wheaton opened with a sluggish start and struggled to get plays started. Wheaton scored seven points in the first quarter before Marionville got on the board with an Eddie Villar baseline drive. Marty Minnis added four points, and Derek Malcom added two points to give Marionville a total of eight, compared to Wheaton’s 11.
In the second quarter, both teams turned over the ball multiple times and were scoreless until 3:26 left in the first half. Wheaton put the score at 16-8 before Ryan White scored. Matt Jones scored the only other two points for Marionville to put the score at 12-22 at the half.
Malcom scored first in the third quarter, while Landen Metcalf added a three-pointer. Wheaton still led by eight and continued to increase the point gap.
Marionville scored with less than a minute left with Sam Maples making
two. The Comets trailed 19-36 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Maples, Blane Redus and Ryan White scored for Marionville, but Wheaton pulled out with the 48-32 win.
Marionville’s last game in the tournament is against Pierce City at 6 p.m., January 27.
