Interim Police Chief Pat Jenkins with the Aurora Police Department said officials identified a crash victim early Thursday morning as Elchico T. Barnes, 33, of Springfield.
At approximately 3:55 a.m., August 28, Aurora police officers responded to a one-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and Missouri Highway 39 involving a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.
A few minutes earlier, APD officers received notification that officers from the Billings Police Department and a Lawrence County deputy were in pursuit of a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 60.
Aurora officers were en route to the area when the crash occurred.
Barnes attempted a right turn onto Highway 39, failed to make the turn and struck the base of a light pole at the intersection.
Barnes, was later pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
The vehicle was later determined to have been reported stolen in Springfield.
