The Verona Lady Wildcats improved their record 2-1 last week with wins over Hurley and McAuley and a loss to Southwest.
Southwest
Verona traveled to Southwest on January 10 for a 33-61 loss.
Southwest outscored Verona 14-9 in the first quarter and led 33-20 at the half.
Southwest kept the Lady Wildcats to single digits in the third and fourth quarter, while Southwest posted 14 points each quarter.
Amanda Mullen led with seven points, followed by Tristan Carrasquillo with six; Taylor Pinkly, Shelby Barsotti and Jessica Youngberg with four each; Tessa Bilyeu with three and Leann Hesemann with two.
Southwest outrebounded Verona 36-17 and had 12 steals, compared to Vreona’s nine -- Carrasquillo credited with five of them.
Hurley
The Lady Wildcats led by double digits through most of the game, but Hurley managed to cut the lead to four before Verona won 60-56.
Pinkly first scored, while Carrasquillo followed with her first two points of the night.
Carrasquillo, Pinkly, Mullen and Rachel Welters scored for Verona in the first quarter, allowing the Lady Wildcats to lead 10-5.
Hurley scored first in the second quarter, but Verona kept the Lady Tigers to 10 points in the quarter.
Meanwhile, Barsotti, Mullen, Carrasquillo, Jessica Youngberg and Hesemann scored for the Lady Wildcats to put the score at 26-15 at the half.
Carrasquillo turned up the intensity in the third quarter, scoring 10 of the 15 points. Hesemann and Barsotti made two points each and Pinkly hit a free throw.
In the fourth quarter, Carrasquillo hit a three-pointer and Welters hit one later in the quarter.
Pinkly, Barsotti and Youngberg also contributed in the quarter.
McAuley
Verona traveled to McAuley Catholic on January 13 for a 65-29 win.
The Lady Wildcats opened the game with a 23-9 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats limited McAuley to four points in the second quarter, compared to their 14 points. Verona led 37-13 at the half.
In the third quarter, Verona outscored McAuley 22-10, while both teams scored six in the final quarter, sealing the Lady Wildcats’ win.
Carrasquillo led with 36 points, followed by Pinkly and Barsotti scoring 10 each; and Bilyeu, Mullen and Welters with three each.
Verona had 14 total rebounds on the night -- Carrasquillo having six. The Lady Wildcats had 19 steals total -- Carrasquillo led with 13.
