With Marionville’s Applefest just around the corner, it is time to award the Betty C Cook Memorial Scholarship and come up with a theme for Applefest 2009.

Betty Cook was one of the original founders of Applefest 21 years ago. Every year Applefest committee members pick a theme and encourage Marionville students to write an essay pertaining to that theme and award the scholarship.

This year’s essay theme was “Pride in My Community As An American,” and the winner was Shavala Dericks.

“Shavala put a great deal of effort and pride into her essay making it an easy choice,” said Kathy Urschel, a member of the Applefest  Committee.

Theme

Coming up with a theme is a big task each year.

“This year, we thought we would try something different and ask classes from Marionville School to help us. Denise Clinkingbeard’s first grade class was the winner in this event,” said Urschel
After careful consideration with help from both Clinkingbeard and Jill   Bettinger, teacher’s aide, the class came up with “Marionville, A Town as Sweet as Its Apples.”

This will go on the cover of the information booklets, along with a picture of a candy apple. The prize for all of their efforts was an ice cream party and $50 to be used for the classroom.

This years Applefest is slated for September 25 and 26.

“If you have a talent for hand made wares, please contact me at 417-840-9687 to reserve a spot for this year’s craft festival. You won’t be disappointed,” said Urschel.

Anyone who wants to decorate a bike, design a float, saddle up a horse or polish up an old car is welcome to join the parade on Saturday September 26. (Call the number above to register for the parade.)
