For about 12 years, Aurora’s night sky has stayed dim during this country’s largest celebration -- Fourth of July.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce, along with the city of Aurora, civic organizations, church groups and private individuals, will once again light the night, just a bit earlier than other communities.
On Saturday, June 19, Baldwin Park will come alive with activities complete with fireworks.
“It is a full day of community-picnic type activities,” said Shannon Walker, Chamber of Commerce director.
The decision to have the Light the Night event in June rather than July was to save on the fireworks expenses.
Activities begin at 1 p.m. with stage events, including the arrival of a Black Hawk helicopter and a double-header baseball game of Aurora vs. Marionville.
Those young and old will have activities to keep them entertained, including listening to local bands perform on stage.
Harvest Christian Band, Gotta Dance Studio, Hearts Cry Band and Kindergarten Kasualties Band will perform. Area residents will also have the opportunity to perform on stage with the Minute to Win It games and karaoke.
Rep. Don Ruzicka and Sen. Jack Goodman are scheduled to make appearances at the community event.
At about 9:20 p.m., fireworks will fill the sky to conclude the day’s activities. Walker said the best spot for viewing will be at the soccer fields. Residents need to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Outside coolers will not be permitted.
Admission to the park is free, and area businesses will offer or sell goodies during the day.
For a complete list of activities, see the schedule of events in this week’s paper.
