The Marionville Comets took a stand against Pierce City last night as the Comets advanced to the semifinal round of district play in football. The Aurora Houn' Dawgs fell victim to Monett in the first round, ending the Dawgs 2012 season.
Marionville hosted the Eagles for the 38-13 win. The Comets will play Miller next Wednesday at the Cardinals' home stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
Aurora allowed Monett to score in the first drive of the night to put the Cubs up 8-0 with less than 10 minutes left in the first quarter. However, the Dawgs answered on their first drive of the night as Everett Basham made his way into the endzone on a run. Cody Coatney was successful on the two-point conversion, tying the score at eight.
Monett opened the second quarter with another score that would hold for the rest of the first half. The Cubs held Aurora's offense at a standstill, leaving the Dawgs trailing 8-15 at the half.
Basham found the endzone in the third quarter to pull Aurora within one, but that was as close as Aurora came to changing the momentum of the game.
Monett scored two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lead 29-14. Aurora scored one last time to pull within nine, but Monett answered with another touchdown for the 27-20 win.
