• Houn' Dawgs win over Ava; Comets fall to Miller

  • On the first night of Friday football, area teams came away with one win and one loss to start the season. Aurora traveled to Ava, while Marionville hosted rival Miller.
    Aurora scored in the first quarter with William Blankenship running the ball 11 yards, and Cody Coatney kicking a successful field goal to put the Houn' Dawgs up 7-0.
    Ava found the end zone on a 27-yard pass but couldn't find the uprights, allowing Aurora the one-point lead.
    Clayton Sumners kept the ball for a one-yard carry in the second quarter to put more distance between Aurora and Ava with another succesful field goal by Coatney. Aurora led 14-6 at the half.
    In the third, Everett Basham ran the ball for 19 yards and a touchdown. The field-goal kick was blocked, putting the score at 20-6.
    In the fourth quarter, Sumners ran the ball again for one yard. This time, Coatney was successful to give Aurora 27 and Ava 6.
    The Houn' Dawgs won 27-6 to go 1-0 this season and will travel to East Newton next week.
    Marionville received the opening kick and marched up the field but had to settle for a field goal to go up 3-0. The Comets couldn't get an offense foothold the rest of the first quarter, while Miller managed to run the ball well against Marionville's defense.
    The Cardinals led 20-3 at the end of the first quarter.
    Miller scored another touchdown early in the second quarter, but Marionville answered with a touchdown of its own. The Comets held the ball on second and nine as Ryan White handed the ball off to Seth Smith. Smith ran the ball for 27 yards to give Marionville it's only touchdown of the night. Augie Gracia was successful on his field goal to put the Comets down 10-26.
    Miller scored two more times before the half to lead 39-10. The Cardinals walked away with a 53-10 win over Marionville.
    Marionville goes 0-1 and travels to Pleasant Hope next week.
