  • If the plan Les Gardner outlined for the Marionville Board of Aldermen last week comes to fruition, Marionville could become a destination for dinner -- accompanied by freshly distilled spirits.
He noted negotiations are under way for buildings on the west side of the square. He outlined plans for developing Crescent Moon Bistro and Distillery.
While the board asked questions during his presentation, there was little debate over approving his request for a liquor license. The board voted unanimously 5-0 to approve the request. (Alderman Phillip Harter was absent from the meeting.)
Gardner also outlined plans to include area producers as suppliers for the restaurant, with items ranging from beef to produce to cheese.
Plans call for having a glass-enclosed area where clientele can observe the distilling process. He also spoke of this as an educational experience.
“It’s science -- chemistry going on -- a good educational process,” said Gardner.
His timeline for opening the establishment is early spring of 2013. Gardner estimated hiring 30 to 35 employees for the first phase of the development and producing 60 cases of liquor a week. In five years, he hopes to have 100 employees and move some of the distilling offsite.
He noted he is working with tour groups like those who travel Route 66 and encouraging them to visit Marionville once the business is under way.
He even noted he has an idea for a product called “White Squirrel Shine” and spoke of plans for using the upstairs area for private parties and receptions.
